Program Information

The Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Program injected over $180 million into Manitoba's urban, rural and northern municipal infrastructure over an eight-year period, 2000-2008.

The program continues a history of collaboration and partnership between Canada and Manitoba with initiatives that promote and support long-term and viable economic development in the Province of Manitoba.

The Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Agreement is funded by equal contributions from the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba and community partners such as local governments and other community organizations in the private and non-profit sectors.

  • CMIP's primary investment focus is green municipal infrastructure which includes projects that protect and/or enhance the quality of our environment, such as:
    • water and wastewater systems
    • water management
    • solid waste management and recycling
    • capital expenditures to retrofit or improve the energy efficiency of buildings and facilities owned by local governments.
  • The secondary focus of CMIP is other local infrastructure, including local transportation, cultural and recreational infrastructure, infrastructure supporting tourism, rural and remote telecommunications, high-speed Internet access for local public institutions, and affordable housing.
Project Types

Infrastructure projects that were eligible for Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Program funding are those designated for public use or benefit through their construction, renewal, expansion or material enhancement. Examples of eligible project types included:
  • Green Environmental Infrastructure
  • Local Transportation Infrastructure
  • Cultural and Recreational Infrastructure
  • Infrastructure Supporting Tourism
  • Rural and Northern Telecommunications Infrastructure
  • High-Speed Internet Access for Public Institutions
  • Affordable Housing
Project Criteria

Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Program project applications were prioritized according to set criteria with preference given to those projects which met two or more of the following set criteria:
  1. Enhancement of the Quality of the Environment
  2. Support of Long Term Economic Growth
  3. Improvement of Community Infrastructure
  4. Building 21st Century Infrastructure Through Encouraging Best Technologies, New Approaches and Best Practices
