Community Adjustment Fund (CAF)

The Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) is a federal program that was launched in the spring of 2009 to address the short-term economic needs of Canadian communities impacted by the global recession. Managed by Western Economic Diversification Canada, this initiative is providing economic stimulus by supporting projects that create jobs and maintain employment in and around communities that have experienced significant job losses and lack alternative employment opportunities.

CAF primarily targets resource/manufacturing-dependent communities of fewer than 250,000 people. CAF applications are processed federally, and projects identifying provincial funding sources may also be considered by various provincial departments. As of February 2010, 42 projects were approved under CAF, 20 of which received a total of over $37.6 million in federal-provincial funding. Twenty-two received federal-only funding of $11.7 million.

The Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Secretariat is responsible for co-ordinating provincial contributions towards Manitoba CAF projects. All projects funded under CAF must be completed by March 31, 2011.
